It’s Too Good to Be True!

August 18, 2009

ss-6516556-genieLampOne of the most prolific clichés in our culture is:

“Well, you know, if it sounds too good to be true, then it is!”

Yes, I know. I know why this precaution is so popular. I know why we let people get away with such a limiting pronouncement-over and over again! I know why we buy into such a dead end deal.

We’re scared. Or is it “scarred?”

It’s both.

Stay Upbeat, Active to Keep the Mind Young

July 21, 2009

amd_ivy_bean2To stave off the mental decline associated with old age, engage in intellectually challenging activities, maintain a positive outlook and keep up your social life.

Those are the findings of what researchers say is the largest-ever review of studies on aging and the brain.

The review, which spanned three decades and covered more than 400 studies, found that remaining physically, mentally and socially active has a substantial impact on whether older adults experience declines in memory and cognition, which includes the ability to learn and solve problems.

How Your Mind Really Works

July 15, 2009

Xray-Head-Mind-Brain-sHow is it that your mind is capable of handling new situations you’ve never previously encountered? How do you solve a problem you’ve never solved before? Is this just the magic of consciousness, or is there an underlying process — or algorithm — your mind uses behind the scenes to deal with the unique experiences you encounter each day? And if there is a process, how can you use it to improve your ability to think?

The Mind and Choice

July 15, 2009

The mind and choiceWe live in an age where we are now exploring the mind and personal choice in society.  Living in a society that produces technology that can read into the mind to determine what a person is thinking, and moving towards a future where even our desires might be determinable by machine.  There is no doubt that these new discoveries that are coming to the forefront will bring about issues relating to mind control and manipulation of personal freedom.  People are panicking at the thought of loosing the ability to choose their own goals and the things in which they wish to experience in life and also personal thoughts.

The true question to ask in this situation is, ‘is it ever possible to loose control of the mind?’

Self Perception

July 14, 2009

dreamstime_818639Our self perception determines our behavior – if we think we are inadequate, we act that way. If we think we are splendid, we act that way.

The pathway forward towards happiness and authenticity is not determined by something outside ourselves. It’s determined by our own thinking, our own inner process, our self perception.

So if our way forward feels blocked, it is blocked by the way we perceive ourselves, by our fears and how they cause us to act toward ourselves. We take forward with us our unhealed inner negative perceptions and recreate the same situations over and over.

Artificial Intelligence–Getting Computers to Think

July 9, 2009

aiYou’re trying to get a computer to act like a person but you don’t really know what a person is. If you want to imitate something the logical first step is to understand what you’re trying to imitate. The point most scientists miss is there is a spirit soul within the body controlling it.

The body can be compared to the computer as both are machines. Both machines (the body and the computer) require intelligent direction from a spiritual living entity to function properly. I can think, I can reason, I can analyze the data and come to logical conclusions. Even if I program this into the computer, the computer just plays back my instructions. It’s something like recording your voice with a tape recorder then playing it back and claiming the tape recorder is talking.

Illusions In the Mind Create Irrational Fears

June 24, 2009

fear1People will often refer to their emotions or fears as irrational. But if we learn how emotions are created, we can see that they are not irrational. They are actually the practical result of what the mind and imagination are doing. It is what the mind and imagination are doing that are completely irrational. Or I should say fabricated in a virtual reality of illusions.

When we understand how the mind creates illusions through stories and how emotions are created from believing these scenarios, then we see that emotions make complete sense. Once we understand this, we no longer fear our emotions. Emotions are just a result of the mind telling stories without our direction over the outcome. To gain self mastery over the mind and the direction of the imagination is how we will get a handle on our emotions.

Templeton Plan

June 23, 2009

Suggested by Pocholo Peralta (Plato On-line)

john-templetonTo better understand the financial wisdom of John Templeton, we are discussing some of his twenty-one steps detailed in The Templeton Plan and pairing them with financial news. We are currently discussing Step 14: Controlling Your Thoughts for Effective Action.

John Templeton often looks to others’ wisdom to augment his own perspective. In the chapter on ”Controlling Your Thoughts for Effective Action” in The Templeton Plan, he uses the words of George Matthew Adams, author and advertising executive, to further illustrate this step:

“We can accomplish almost anything within our ability if we but think that we can. Every great achievement in this world was first carefully thought out. . . . Think–but to a purpose. Think constructively. Think as you read. Think as you listen. Think as you travel and your eyes reveal new situations. Think as you work daily at your desk, or in the field, or while strolling. Think to raise and improve your place in life. There can be no advancement or success without serious thought.”

Paradigms, idols, and the mind in matter

June 19, 2009

descartesIt doesn’t mean paradigms are irrational, only that they are made up of things besides evidence–things like the values of the relevant community, which lie outside the bounds of science. The bottom line, according to Kuhn, is that there is no irrefutable proof to support the choice of one paradigm over another.

It’s helpful to keep this in mind when thinking about Descartes’s paradigm. Viewing matter as devoid of mind is a paradigm choice. It’s not an irrefutable fact about the world. It is a useful model that has made possible incredible technological advances–like the communication we’re using now.

Can the Mind Shape the Brain?

May 15, 2009

990103brainConventional wisdom holds that the human mind is nothing more than the human brain. This belief derives from materialism. By “materialism” I don’t mean the mania to shop unceasingly at the mall. Rather, I mean the philosophy that material reality is all that there is. Immaterial or spiritual realities are, in this view, simply epiphenomena of the material world.

Your Perception IS Your Reality

May 12, 2009

retirement_quotes-image-happinessTake a minute to scan your surroundings. Are you in a familiar place or somewhere new? Stop reading this, and just look around you. Pick out an object, maybe something you hadn’t noticed before, and focus your attention on it. If you really focus, it’ll get brighter and more “real” than it was when it was just an unnoticed piece of the background noise of your life. Now, try to view your surroundings from the point of the object. Some people can do this with no effort, and for others, it takes some concentration. Depending on how adept you are at focusing your concentration, you may notice a slight shift in your perception – a weird jump in realty, where you are suddenly viewing the world from a different perspective.

Reality and Perception

May 12, 2009

The Thinker, GibranOur shared physical reality is the most common state of reality we experience, but it certainly isn’t the only one.  Our nighttime dreams are another state, as are astral experiences, near-death experiences, and out-of-body experiences.

I regard these different levels of reality as being at different frequencies or energy levels.  It’s like tuning into different TV channels.  Physical reality seems slower, denser, and less malleable than the other levels.

Rapid Perception – Slowing Time Down

May 6, 2009

slowtimeYour spirit operates outside time and space. When there is an emergency where danger is about to approach you faster than you can normally sense, your spirit will compel you to act quickly without pondering. It directs you through your instinct and reflexes. Think of a time when you moved out of harms way in an instant and the move was so spontaneously it seems that everything just flowed in the moment. Your awareness of what was happening and your response happened without hesitation, but so quickly that it was almost together at the same time.

70 Ways to Increase Your Brain Power

May 4, 2009

brain-power-logo-2You Want More Brainpower – Not Higher IQ Scores!

Okay, maybe you want higher IQ scores too. The American Heritage Dictionary defines Intelligence Quotient as “The ratio of tested mental age to chronological age, usually expressed as a quotient multiplied by 100.”

Basically, it’s a test of intelligence, with 100 as the average score. There are some problems with IQ tests however.

A recent IQ test asked which of four fruits was different. It was the one with more than one seed; but what if you were not familiar with these fruits? Obviously this test is culturally biased. You are assumed to have certain knowledge, yet you are being tested for intelligence, not knowledge.

Emotions are learnt paradigms

April 27, 2009

emotions-are-learntEmotions are learnt in our world through experiencing feelings.

Have we ever stopped to think about how emotions play a role within our lives? When a person has a feeling within their body, a reaction to a causal event, they then create a set feedback in which to respond to the input they are receiving, this is called emotion. It happens everyday in our lives that when we have to come into face with situations or conversations, these experiences spark certain reactions within our bodies that can change the way we choose to handle the situation at hand.

Why is logic relevant to everyday life?

April 23, 2009

old_person_thinking_200011105Logic:

* Enables clear thought through a rigorous demand for truthfulness;
* Because thought processes are clarified, the use of logic enables consideration of all available options for opinion and action, and decreases the persuasive power of popular opinion;
* Because available options have been fairly considered, the use of logic increases the likelihood that subsequent opinions and actions will adhere most closely to the truth.
* Adherence to the truth, while sometimes painful, is the human condition more likely to lead to satisfactory outcomes in most situations.
* Therefore, logic’s relevance to everyday life is that its use improves the likelihood of satisfactory outcomes in the day-to-day decisions each person makes.

What is relevant?

April 23, 2009

relevanceHas there ever been a time in your life when you have all of a sudden really wanted to achieve or buy something and then everyone else seems to also want it. It might also be that the thing that you want, whether that is a car or a job or maybe even an experience, you are starting to see it everywhere you go, on billboards, in magazines, people talking about it and it is on the television. Why is it now everywhere, now that you are interested in it, and yet earlier you did not notice it at all?

How Our Brains are Wired for Belief

April 22, 2009

8brainsRecent advances in neuroscience and brain-imaging technology have offered researchers a look into the physiology of religious experiences. In observing Buddhist monks as they meditate, Franciscan nuns as they pray and Pentecostals as they speak in tongues, Dr. Andrew Newberg, a radiologist at the University of Pennsylvania, has found that measurable brain activity matches up with the religious experiences described by worshippers.

Mind, Nature, and Evolution: Is it Matter or Spirit?‎

April 15, 2009

across-the-universeWhat drives the evolution of life?‎

Most people associate mind and intelligence mainly with humans and only marginally with other highly evolved animals. We tend to regard humankind as separate from the rest of nature, a different order of being. In pre-modern times this was not so.

The Mind and Materialist Superstition

April 14, 2009

i_cogs_in_the_he_300Materialists have taken note of the growing efforts by non-materialist neuroscientists to point out the deep problems with the inference that the brain is entirely the cause of the mind. Materialist neuroscience, like materialist evolutionary biology, is a vacuous orthodoxy, and its proponents resent threats to their dogma. Darwinian explanations for functional biological complexity are nonsense, but some familiarity with the relevant science is necessary to understand that it is nonsense. Materialist explanations for the mind are transparent nonsense.

Consider the six characteristics of the mind, generally accepted by materialist and non-materialist scientists and philosophers. Each of the six poses enormous problems for a materialistic explanation.

Electric Thoughts?

Reality: Truth or Perception

April 7, 2009

malaysia0493If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?

Philosophy defines reality as the sum of all that is real, absolute, and unchangeable. But can reality actually be defined absolutely, or is it something that is different for everyone? Is it not true that how we view reality is based upon our own personal framework of experience? Or is there in truth a reality beyond that which we see daily, is there an absolute unchangeable constant that is always with us? And if so, what is it?

Is all of reality simply perception?

April 7, 2009

I’d like to think it is…

I’ve witnessed the power of positive thinking first hand. I have seen how labels separate and draw people together. I have seen how long held beliefs destroy people and build them up.  And I have seen how ideas of right and wrong influence people’s decisions.

Mind Travelers

April 6, 2009

Will we be able to travel the universe with our mind in the future?

In this article I am going to write about a topic that relates to an issue that might not at all seem rational to most people, mind traveling. This is a topic that explores the mind to a much further degree to what most people are accustomed to. My writing as an author and explorer of life relates to the study of the mind and how we come to perceive life and reality. I really have only just touched the surface in explaining how I obtain information and experiences relating to these topics, so far only really isolating topics that fall within the materialistic approach, showing the formation of the dimensions in material space in relation to the mind and the core of creation.

Doubting Darwin: Debate Over The Mind’s Evolution

March 26, 2009

eyetreeA century and a half after Charles Darwin published his theory of evolution, some still doubt its ability to explain the emergence of human beings and other forms of life.

These days, some Darwin skeptics are focusing on the human brain. They say a higher power must be involved; otherwise, how could a bunch of cells produce such complicated mental processes as consciousness or subjective experiences? How could something like free will be the result of evolution?

Happiness Lies Within

March 24, 2009

happinessAs a hypnotherapist, I challenge people to change their thoughts to change their destiny. I believe the whole purpose of this incarnation is to learn to love ourselves first, and then to extend that love to others. Until we really learn to fully love ourselves, we put on a protective shield because we do not feel safe in the world. We create self-imposed limitations to love. The good news is that we can free ourselves from our self-limitations. We can change our mind about how we see the world by getting in touch with our inner spirit. At the core of our being we are love, so there is no need to search for it, just acknowledge it.
