Illusions In the Mind Create Irrational Fears

June 24, 2009

fear1People will often refer to their emotions or fears as irrational. But if we learn how emotions are created, we can see that they are not irrational. They are actually the practical result of what the mind and imagination are doing. It is what the mind and imagination are doing that are completely irrational. Or I should say fabricated in a virtual reality of illusions.

When we understand how the mind creates illusions through stories and how emotions are created from believing these scenarios, then we see that emotions make complete sense. Once we understand this, we no longer fear our emotions. Emotions are just a result of the mind telling stories without our direction over the outcome. To gain self mastery over the mind and the direction of the imagination is how we will get a handle on our emotions.

A whole new reality

May 21, 2009

second_life-nanobugleIt’s The Sims wrapped in the World Wide Web wrapped in an enigma.

It’s called Second Life, and it’s a world just like this one, except it’s computerized – and you can fly.

Second Life is an Internet-based program that allows users to create 3-D versions of themselves that walk around and interact with the 3-D versions of other real people in a digital “world” that is more than three times the geographic size of San Francisco. There are at least 7 million registered users and about 40,000 people logged in at any given moment.

In this virtual world, you can buy land, clothes and anything else your imagination can dream up for real money. More than $200,000 is exchanged daily in Second Life.

But Second Life is far more than a game. It’s a model that could potentially ensconce the Internet and revolutionize education. Instead of going to the University of Oregon’s Web site, you could venture your 3-D self to the virtual campus and get information there. Instead of reading about ancient Rome in a textbook, you could walk through its bustling ancient streets virtually.

All in the mind’s eye

April 6, 2009

485px-descartes_mind_and_bodyHas anyone ever let their imagination run away with them? For example, we recently had a problem with moths in our house, and for a while afterwards, I was convinced I could see moths everywhere. Luckily, I’m not going mad, as researchers from Vanderbilt University in the US have now proved that what you see with your ‘mind’s eye’ might have a direct impact on what you see back in reality. This is the first study to show that imagining something changes your vision both while you are imagining it and afterwards.

Your Perception is Everything

March 13, 2009

david-head-closeup-w-laser-sLet me tell you my story. The other day a friend of mine came over to my place for just one reason; to complain about a recent event, a disturbing event as he explained it to me. When he finished his “monologue” (I am sorry, but I have no other word) I just said one thing: perception is everything. Instantly he was angry and started yelling at me. ” What do you mean by that, Mr. Philosopher?” he asked, incensed. “Are you saying I am a liar or crazy or that it’s my imagination?”

‘Mind’s eye’ influences visual perception

February 24, 2009

true20my20eyesLetting your imagination run away with you may actually influence how you see the world. New research from Vanderbilt University has found that mental imagery –what we see with the “mind’s eye”– directly impacts our visual perception.
